About GESRI
GESRI is a fiscally sponsored 501(c)(3) nonprofit (under HackClub Bank) that publishes the Gesri Journal, an online publication for student research. Founded in 2024, we've spent three years building a platform for young researchers to share rigorous work and reach an audience beyond their classroom. We run lean: no paid staff, low overhead, and a volunteer team that cares about the mission.
Our founder is graduating and transitioning out of day-to-day leadership. We're looking for the next person to run GESRI.
The Role
You'd be taking over as the operational and editorial lead of GESRI. Concretely, that means:
- Owning the editorial pipeline: managing submissions, coordinating peer review, and making final publication decisions
- Recruiting and leading a small volunteer team of editors and reviewers
- Maintaining the website, social presence, and author communications
- Handling GESRI's finances and compliance through HackClub Bank
- Setting direction for the journal — what we publish, how we grow, what we say no to
This is a real leadership role at a real nonprofit. You'll have a lot of autonomy and a lot of responsibility. Nothing about this job is decorative.
Who We're Looking For
- Currently an undergraduate (any year, any major — though some interest in research, publishing, or education helps)
- Reliable. The single most important trait. Things only ship if someone consistently shows up.
- Comfortable making decisions and communicating clearly in writing
- Interested in running an organization, not just holding a title
- Able to commit roughly [5–10] hours per week during the academic year
You do not need prior nonprofit experience, editorial experience, or a famous résumé. We care about judgment and follow-through.
The Transition
We're structuring this as a mentored two-month trial:
- Months 1–2: You take on increasing responsibility while the current founder mentors you directly — weekly check-ins, shadowing, hands-on training in the editorial pipeline, HCB operations, and the technical stack. At the end of two months, both sides decide whether to move forward.
- After month 2: If it's a fit, you take over as Executive Director with full account access, decision-making authority, and ongoing advisory support from the founder as needed.
This structure protects both you and the organization. If it isn't the right match after the trial, there's a graceful off-ramp on both sides.

This is an unpaid, volunteer role.
