Director of Zoological Services
Summary:Plans, coordinates, manages, oversees, and directs all operations, staff, budget, educational programs, activities, and fundraising efforts of the Buttonwood Park Zoo.
Coordinate and oversee daily operations including administration, collection management, publiceducation, and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
Provide guidance andleadershipto Zoo administrative staff in the development and implementation of short-term and long-term goals and objectives for Zoo projects, animal transactions, building and grounds maintenance.
Recruit, supervise, train, monitor, mentor, and retain qualified staff necessary to effectively manage Zoo operations, ensuring staff compliance with zoo policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Develop, administer, and authorize expenditures in the annual budget process, capital projects, and daily operations while partnering with the Zoological Society for donor cultivation and fundraising opportunities.
Supervise and participate in fundraising activities including exploring and managing grant-based funding opportunities.
Develop and implement strategic plans for the operation of the Zoo and its mission-based programs.
Responsible for efficiently meeting the facility, operational, program and organizational standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums promoting mentorship and staff involvement in AZA programs.
Establish measurable program excellence in animal care and welfare, wildlife conservation, environmentaleducation, andcommunity impact.
Manage and maintain a safe, family-friendlyguest experiencepromoting anappreciationfor wildlife and wild places.
In concert with the Chief Operating Officer and Mayor’s Office, represent the Buttonwood Park Zoo in all aspects of zoological management, conservationeducation, and wildlife conservation to local and national press.
Respond to public inquiries, requests and complaints regarding zoo-related matters following through with action items and resolutions to issues and identified problematic situations.
Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws related to Zoo property, population, and protocols.
Prepare and publish a variety of reports, records, and documentation including reports to periodical publications and professional journals such as AZA, related to scientific research and other subject matter encompassing zoo operations and its animal population.
Maintain professional and harmonious relationships with the community, employees, City department heads, the Zoological Society, City of New Bedford Administration, and other community-based organizations and groups.
Attend meetings and/or serve on committees pertaining to zoo management, construction, and development.
Experience Required
