Ineffable Films is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to film education, youth engagement, and underrepresented storytelling. Through programs like Open Hours, Festival Wings, and Write Yourself In, we connect aspiring filmmakers with the people who have actually done the work. We operate across New York, Boston, San Diego, and Los Angeles, with a team of 30+ volunteers who actually move things. Stories that Travel.
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Director of Photography to mentor emerging and youth filmmakers virtually, and in-person in NYC when it works for you.
Responsibilities
- Mentor emerging and youth filmmakers on cinematography, lighting, lensing, and visual storytelling
- Hold occasional 1:1 virtual sessions, or join group mentorship windows through our Open Hours program
- Review reels, scenes, or shot lists from young filmmakers and give honest, generous feedback
- Help mentees navigate gear decisions, set etiquette, and what it actually takes to break into the work
- Optional: meet mentees in person in the NYC area when your schedule allows
- Optional: join us at our NYC screening of Know Your Muse on May 4 and connect with the youth filmmakers we serve
Qualifications
- Real DP experience, narrative, documentary, commercial, or a mix
Required Skills
- Patience and the ability to break down craft for someone who is still finding their voice
- Comfort with virtual mentorship (Zoom, video review, async feedback)
- Flexibility, you set the pace based on what your week looks like
Preferred Skills
- Nice to have: NYC-based or in the area for occasional in-person sessions
- A genuine interest in amplifying underrepresented voices through film
Pay range and compensation package
- Type: Volunteer (virtual primary, with optional in-person in NYC)
- Commitment: 2 to 3 hours per month, fully flexible
- Location: Remote, NYC area for optional in-person
- Reports to: Ineffable Films leadership
