Our work blends mental health care, art therapy, Hawaiian cultural practices, mentorship, and life skills education rooted in the land and guided by love.

Humanity Hale is currently expanding toward the development of a trauma-informed transitional housing village for youth aging out of foster care, including the acquisition of land and funding for youth housing cabins, community spaces, and long-term wraparound support services.

Employment Type

• Full-Time (Independent Contractor or Salaried): 40 hours/week
• Ideally based in the state of Hawaiʻi (any island)
• Occasional in-person trainings, donor meetings, events, and team gatherings on Hawaiʻi Island
• Probation Period: 90 days from start date
• Reports To: Charis Higginson, Executive Director

Position Summary

The Director of Philanthropy will lead all aspects of Humanity Hale’s fundraising and income-generating efforts outside of grants to ensure the sustainability and expansion of our programs and long-term vision.

The ideal candidate will already possess established relationships with Hawaiʻi-based philanthropists, corporate sponsors, foundations, community leaders, and/or high-net-worth donors, and will be expected to leverage and expand these networks to generate sustainable funding streams beyond traditional grant cycles.

This role is not solely focused on fundraising events, but on building long-term philanthropic partnerships and securing transformational gifts that support Humanity Hale’s mission and future growth.

This individual will bring a deep understanding of ethical fundraising, donor stewardship, relationship-building, strategic planning, and community engagement. They will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Grants & Strategic Partnerships, Board of Directors, and broader team to amplify our mission and engage supporters with integrity, transparency, and care.

The Director of Philanthropy will also help oversee fundraising events, donor campaigns, silent auctions, sponsorship opportunities, and community benefit initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive revenue growth by developing and executing a strategic fundraising plan to meet annual and long-term financial goals
• Cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic partners capable of contributing transformational gifts
• Build and maintain long-term donor relationships rooted in trust, authenticity, and meaningful impact
• Utilize existing professional relationships and networks to open doors for new funding opportunities and strategic partnerships
• Lead donor cultivation campaigns, sponsorship outreach, and philanthropic storytelling initiatives
• Support capital campaign efforts related to Humanity Hale’s transitional housing village and future expansion
• Develop sustainable fundraising strategies beyond grant funding and event-based revenue
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Grants & Strategic Partnerships to ensure alignment between philanthropic outreach, grant strategy, and organizational funding priorities
• Help plan and oversee fundraising events, including benefit galas, silent auctions, donor gatherings, and community campaigns
• Engage and support the Board of Directors in philanthropic efforts and donor relationship development
• Work closely with Humanity Hale’s CPA and accounting team to ensure alignment between fundraising income, reporting, and compliance
• Compile and assist with Annual Reports, impact materials, and donor-facing communications
• Maintain accurate donor records and oversee donor database management
• Collaborate with communications and program staff to create compelling fundraising materials and campaigns
• Monitor fundraising metrics and provide regular progress reports to leadership
• Represent Humanity Hale at donor meetings, networking events, community functions, and public-facing engagements
• Center equity, transparency, cultural humility, and trauma-informed principles in all philanthropic practices

Qualifications

• Preference for someone who lives in the state of Hawai'i (any island)
• Existing relationships with funders, philanthropists, corporate sponsors, community leaders, and/or high-net-worth donors in Hawaiʻi, or contacts on the mainland who'd be open to supporting our work
• Proven experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor cultivation, sponsorship procurement, and donor stewardship
• Demonstrated success securing major gifts, sponsorships, or large-scale philanthropic investments
• Strong track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising and revenue goals
• Comfortable engaging with high-net-worth individuals, corporate partners, and community leaders in both formal and relationship-centered environments
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including confidence in making sponsorship asks and donor presentations
• Experience supporting capital campaigns, major donor initiatives, or long-term sustainability planning preferred
• Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• Experience with fundraising and CRM software (Zeffy, Little Green Light, Bloomerang, Salesforce, etc.) preferred
• Self-directed, highly motivated, and capable of independently generating funding opportunities and partnerships
• Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical donor stewardship practices
• Deep respect for culturally grounded, community-based work
• Passion for youth empowerment, trauma recovery, Hawaiian culture, and place-based healing
• Ability to think strategically, act compassionately, and lead with humility

Performance Expectations

• Expected to actively contribute toward annual fundraising goals and revenue benchmarks established with leadership
• Success in this role will be measured through donor acquisition, donor retention, sponsorship procurement, relationship stewardship, partnership development, and overall revenue growth

Compensation & Benefits

• Full-Time Salary: $75,000/year or Independent Contractor Rate: $35/hour
