The Digitization Manager supervises the business and staffing of the Midwest Regional Digitization Center at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with paid and volunteer staff. The perfect candidate is someone with a background in management, and digitization, with an energetic and positive attitude. This position is remote from the main Internet Archive headquarters in San Francisco, CA and therefore requires someone who can work remotely, independent of day to day supervision. This role is perfect for an individual who is mission-driven-with the mission of providing “Universal Access To All Knowledge”- highly organized, coupled with the ability to meet quality standards and contract deadlines. Lastly, and importantly, someone who is just an overall great human being!
This position is located at the Allen County Public Library but is independent of the library. Please do not contact ACPL. Any inquiries should be made to the Internet Archive.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Management & Administration:
Oversee digitization workflows of all material sent to digitization centers, ensuring that digitization is completed in a timely manner and that regular status updates are communicated to partners.
Hire, train and manage digitization staff in compliance with IA and Federal and State guidelines and provide support, coaching and performance feedback so that staff has the training and equipment necessary to achieve their goals.
Maintain acceptable production rates with high quality.
Collaborate with fellow Digitization Managers to set goals for the international group and execute special projects to address operation, partner, and engineering issues.
Monitor and respond to request for proposal and request for quotation solicitations.
Ensure standard procedures are followed to meet digitization requirements within the digitization centers.
Assist our library partners, before, during, and after the digitization process.
Experience managing volunteer staff helpful.
Other duties as assigned.
Business Development:
Attend various conferences regionally as a spokesperson and ambassador for Internet Archive.
Develop and maintain relationships with the Allen County Public Library, our host partner, as well as various library partners, including representing Internet Archive at library functions as appropriate, responding to partner inquiries, giving tours, and providing advice and guidance to partners wanting to begin new projects.
Find and develop new Library Partners for digitization and other Internet Archive-related projects contributing to make the Internet Archive the worlds largest open access digital library as well as ensure a steady flow of work for the centers.
Technical Skills:
Work closely with the Engineering team to test new digitization hardware and software, including reporting issues, user testing and feedback, and suggestions to optimize quality and efficiency.
Maintain the digitization equipment, including routine maintenance and calibration of cameras and upgrading hardware and software components when appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledgeable about digitization hardware, cameras and digitization workflows, particularly book or audio formats.
Superior organizational skills, with the attributes of collaboration, decision making, and autonomy due to the location.
Detail-oriented person with project management experience and excellent follow-through.
Experience in managing staff and creating a friendly, respectful and productive work environment.
Excellent communication skills and experience in building relationships with clients and other vendors to provide a high level of service.
Tech-savvy person who is comfortable with both hardware and software; knowledge of coding is not needed, though comfort in a command-line environment is preferred.
Experience working with software engineers or development teams.
Ability to quickly troubleshoot hardware and software issues to reduce any downtime in production.
Track record of success in creating and streamlining processes and implementing quality improvements.
Flexibility and willingness to take on new projects that may be outside the scope of regular duties.
Commitment to the greater good and to doing work that has a long-term benefit on society.
Bachelor Degree or higher preferred with library experience helpful.
Nonprofit experience preferred but not required.
Ability to handle special material with care.
Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 50lbs.
