Position: Development Officer – Bayou Region
The mission of Second Harvest is to lead the fight against hunger and build food security in South Louisiana through access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. With more than 500 partners across 23 parishes we work to end food insecurity for more than 400,000 people experiencing it in South Louisiana. Second Harvest is the largest anti-hunger organization in the state, and it recently opened a distribution center in the Bayou Region (Lafourche & Terrebonne parishes as well as Morgan City and Grand Isle), which increases our capacity to address food insecurity in the surrounding communities.
We are seeking a mission-driven Development Officer to grow philanthropic support across Louisiana’s Bayou Region. This role stewards a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the capacity to make gifts of $5,000+, advancing our core programs, regional initiatives, and disaster response. The ideal candidate blends relationship mastery with data-driven portfolio management, thrives in the field, and is energized by closing gifts that measurably expand our impact.

Accountabilities
- Develop and execute a plan for soliciting gifts and developing a major gift plan in the context of an annual revenue goal for individual, corporate, and foundation major gifts and sponsor ships.
- Manage a portfolio of 150 donors and prospects. This includes all phases of the gift cycle (identifying and qualifying new prospects, initiating contact with donors, customizing cultivation and solicitation strategies, engaging in direct solicitation or facilitating solicitation meetings as appropriate, and implementing stewardship initiatives). Prepare personalized solicitation packages that focus on organizational needs, funder interests, and recognition, as appropriate.
- Conduct frequent in-person donor meetings, events, and site visits; lead moves management through all stages of the donor cycle.
- Collaborate with colleagues in development, programs, marketing, and volunteer services to deliver exceptional donor experiences and impact reporting.
- Maintain rigorous portfolio hygiene and pipeline analytics in Raiser’s Edge (or similar CRM); track actions, proposals, revenue, and forecasts; report monthly on progress to goals.
- Represent Second Harvest at community events, briefings, and speaking opportunities to elevate our mission and deepen local relationships.
- Help plan and execute major donor cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising events.
- Support the Bayou Advisory Committee.
Qualifications
Education
:
Bachelor’s Degree required. An advanced degree and/or CFRE certification is a plus.
Experience
: 3+ years of experience executing successful major gift programs in excess of $500,000.
- Strong orientation towards an analytical and data/goal-driven major gifts program. Work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and Portfolio & Prospect Research Manager on implementing the portfolio management system, measurement, and reporting of metrics/progress in Raiser’s Edge.
- We are an evidencing CRM organization. Candidates should have experience in reporting monthly on activity and results compared to goals and objectives. Consistently maintain up-to-date data, notes, and actions in Raiser’s Edge.
- Deep knowledge of the community in the Bayou region, including Lafourche, Terrebonne, and St. Mary Parishes as well as Grand Isle.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills; ability to translate complex needs into compelling philanthropic opportunities.
- High initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while collaborating seamlessly across teams.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently within the Bayou Region; occasional evening/weekend work for donor meetings and events.
