Position Summary

The Director of Development is a core member of the development team, responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of major individual donors with the capacity to make gifts of $25,000 and above.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this role serves as a frontline relationship manager and strategic partner in growing individual giving revenue in support of the organization's long-term vision.

This is a relationship-intensive role for a development professional who brings both sophistication in donor cultivation and a genuine commitment to systems change and mission-driven work. The ideal candidate brings an understanding of the philanthropic landscape, a track record of closing major gifts, and the ability to translate complex, multi-layered initiatives into compelling donor-facing narratives.

  • Develop and execute individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for each portfolio relationship.
  • Conduct regular personal outreach through meetings, calls, site visits, and events to deepen donor relationships.
  • Prepare high-quality proposals, briefing materials, acknowledgment letters, and impact updates tailored to each donor's interests and giving history.
  • Partner with executive leadership and program leaders to facilitate donor meetings and strategically engage organizational leadership in cultivation efforts.

Prospect Research & Pipeline Development

  • Identify and qualify new major gift prospects through research, referrals, and networking.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of donor and prospect interactions within the CRM.
  • Develop moves management plans and track portfolio progress against fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with development leadership to strengthen the individual giving pipeline in preparation for future fundraising campaigns.

Donor Communications & Stewardship

  • Partner with communications teams to ensure donor messaging aligns with organizational branding and voice.
  • Design and implement meaningful stewardship opportunities that strengthen donor engagement.
  • Support planning and execution of donor cultivation and fundraising events.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the Chief Development Officer to refine and execute the organization's individual giving strategy.
  • Collaborate with program and policy staff to remain current on organizational initiatives and develop accurate talking points for donor conversations.
  • Contribute to development planning, revenue forecasting, and fundraising reporting.
