Development & Community Engagement Manager
The Development & Community Engagement Manager (DCEM) is a critical leadership role in advancing the mission of the Humane Society of Central Illinois (HSCI). This position combines strategic fundraising, donor stewardship, event planning, community outreach, digital marketing, and volunteer oversight to enhance awareness, engagement, and financial support for HSCI. The DCEM will spearhead initiatives to grow sustainable funding, foster community partnerships, and elevate HSCI’s presence as a leader in animal welfare.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the DCEM oversees donor relations, management of events of all sizes, and leads the organization’s digital and traditional marketing strategies. The DCEM also takes primary responsibility for the recruitment, training, scheduling, and recognition of HSCI volunteers. This role coordinates closely with board members, corporate sponsors, and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Community Engagement, Fundraising and Donor Development (30%)
- Ensure that all donations are acknowledged, with special emphasis tailored to those making larger donations
- Plan and execute major fundraising campaigns including a detailed budget for each, ensuring goals are met or exceeded.
- Represent HSCI at community events, fostering positive relationships with local businesses, leaders, and organizations.
- Develop and execute a community engagement strategy to raise awareness about HSCI’s mission and services.
- Serve as a liaison to community groups to promote collaboration and support.
- Oversee and assist in the research and application of grant opportunities from public and private sources to secure funding.
Event Planning and Execution (30%)
- Plan, coordinate, and execute small to large-scale fundraising events to engage donors and the community.
- Collaborate with board members and committees on major events.
- Facilitate and maintain a master event calendar, ensuring alignment across stakeholders
- Build partnerships with local businesses through programs like Friends of HSCI and Pawtner initiatives
- Build and maintain a process to track all activity for business PAWtners, ensuring that HSCI honors the agreed-upon recognition outlined in the PAWtner program.
Digital Marketing and Public Relations (20%)
- Manage social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube) to promote events, campaigns, and adoptable pets.
- Create and execute email campaigns, newsletters, and targeted donor communications using CRM tools like Network for Good.
- Maintain and update the HSCI website, ensuring accurate and engaging content.
- Write and distribute press releases to promote organizational initiatives and events.
- Track digital analytics to optimize marketing and engagement strategies.
- Maintain consistent branding across all communications
- Coordinate photography, storytelling, and promotional campaigns that highlight HSCI’s mission and impact
Administrative Support and Volunteer Management (20%)
- When needed, supervise interns assigned to community engagement duties
- Maintain accurate records of donors, events, and outcomes using approved platforms.
- Provide regular progress reports to the Executive Director and board on fundraising and engagement efforts.
- Oversee HSCI’s Volunteer Program, including recruitment, onboarding,training, coordination, and recognition.
- Develop and implement strategies to expand and retain a strong, diverse volunteer base that supports all facets of HSCI’s work.
Qualifications: Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- 3–5 years of experience in fundraising, event planning, or community engagement, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Demonstrated success in donor cultivation, grant writing, and securing major donors
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and storytelling.
- Proficiency in digital marketing, including social media platforms, email marketing tools, and CRM systems.
- Familiarity with grant research, application processes, and compliance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including board members, donors, staff, and volunteers.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for events and donor meetings.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds during events.
- Passion for animal welfare and HSCI’s mission is essential.

Pay: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 per year
