Mary Law Executive Search is conducting a confidential search on behalf of a nationally respected and well-established nonprofit organization with a long-standing reputation for excellence, impact, and innovation. With strong financial backing and a clear mission, this organization is entering an exciting new phase of growth and is seeking a strategic and hands-on Controller to join its leadership team.
Position Summary:
The Controller will be a key leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial operations with a focus on integrity, transparency, and strategic alignment. This role will ensure the ongoing health of the organization’s financial systems while supporting high-impact programming and mission delivery. The ideal candidate is not only technically proficient but mission-driven, collaborative, and adaptable to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct and manage all day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and monthly close
Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
Oversee annual budgeting and forecasting processes, working closely with program and department leaders
Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and funder-specific requirements
Manage the annual audit process and relationships with external auditors
Maintain and improve internal financial controls, risk management processes, and compliance systems
Collaborate with leadership on financial planning, strategy, and long-term sustainability
Oversee grant reporting and funder compliance, including restricted/unrestricted funds management
Supervise and mentor finance team members, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
Assist CFO with Board of Director presentations
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
7+ years of progressive finance/accounting experience, with 3+ years in a Controller or senior finance role within an organization of at least a $15 million budget.
Proven experience with audits and financial oversight of multi-million-dollar budgets
Strong technical skills in financial systems
Ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial stakeholders
Mission-driven mindset with a high degree of emotional intelligence, integrity, and discretion
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary up to $160K, excellent benefits, and 3% retirement plan matching.
