Overview
The Community Training Volunteer plays a key role in South Western Ambulance’s goal of improving community resilience by increasing knowledge of CPR and how to use a public access defibrillator in case of an emergency. Volunteers deliver a one‑and‑a‑half hour CPR and defibrillator awareness session, consisting of a presentation and practical exercises.
Responsibilities
- Deliver CPR and defibrillator training sessions to community members.
- Raise awareness of the GoodSAM application, which matches CPR-trained volunteers with out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrests.
- Promote the South Western Ambulance Service Community First Responder schemes.
- Promote the South Western Ambulance Service Charity and invite donations during sessions.
- Volunteer reliably and carry out tasks as guided by the local Community Engagement and Training Officer.
- Select and apply appropriate procedures in accordance with the training received and relevant policies.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all participants to ensure a positive experience.
- Maintain confidentiality of organisational and patient information in line with trust information‑governance guidance.
- Treat everyone with dignity and respect, promoting equality, diversity and a non‑discriminatory culture.
- Adhere to the trust’s non‑remuneration policy for volunteers.
- Maintain cleanliness of the SWAST volunteer uniform, operating environment and all equipment.
- Notify organisers promptly if unable to complete a session as scheduled.
Qualifications and Attributes
- Ability to drive to pre‑arranged training sessions using your own vehicle or a Trust Community Response Vehicle.
- Strong communication skills for presenting to groups.
- Positive outlook, good time‑management and the ability to work independently.
- Capability to interact with people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
- Emotional intelligence and the ability to handle sensitive subjects empathetically.
- Previous training in Basic Life Support (BLS) – refresher training is available.
- Experience engaging a range of age and social groups.
Location
We welcome applicants from throughout Gloucestershire, particularly Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cirencester, North Cotswolds, Stroud Valleys, Forest of Dean and South Gloucestershire.
