Position: Community Programs Operations Director (CPOD)

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

Location: United Kingdom or United States, Remote Based

Working Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week, 9AM-5PM GMT or ET

Salary: up to £55,000 / $70,000 per annum (dependent on location)

The Ehlers-Danlos Society’s mission is dedicated to advancing and accelerating research and education in Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). We support the development of effective and equitable EDS and HSD therapies and work collaboratively to improve the lives of individuals affected by EDS and HSD.

Overview of Responsibilities

This newly created role provides operational and strategic leadership for the Community team, ensuring that program leaders can focus on driving impactful community initiatives while this role optimizes internal operations, streamlines workflows, and removes operational barriers. The CPOD ensures the long-term sustainability and impact of community services by enhancing operational efficiency, rather than delivering direct community programs.

The CPOD will directly line manage:

Community Manager
Community Education Manager
Community Support Coordinator
Educational Outreach Coordinator

Key responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies that support The Society’s priorities, ensuring high-quality project management, and fostering staff development to build operational and strategic capabilities.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions

This role has six (6) core areas of ownership, the responsibilities involved include, but are not limited to: 

Strategy Development & Implementation

Collaborate closely with the C-Suite and wider executive team to develop and execute strategic plans within the Community team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s broader goals.
Translate high-level strategic priorities into actionable plans with clear objectives, timelines, and accountability measures.
Lead the annual review and planning process for Community programs,
Use data-driven insights to inform decision making and guide program impact measurement and continuous improvement.
Identify and integrate best practices to enhance service delivery

Operational Oversight

Optimize existing workflows and develop new processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance efficiency.
Implement and strengthen project management and reporting systems, using monday.com, to track program impact and performance.
Oversee resource allocation and capacity planning, ensuring the team has the necessary tools and support.
Drive technology integration and adaptation to improve service delivery and engagement.

Program Efficiency, Monitoring & Improvement

Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and track program effectiveness through data analysis and reporting.
Implement continuous improvement initiatives based on evaluation metrics, user feedback, and best practices.
Ensure programs are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with the needs of the EDS and HSD community.

Team Leadership and Development

Manage and mentor a diverse team, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and innovative work culture that integrates contributions from other departments to enhance program delivery.
Oversee staff development, including operational skills training, goal setting, and performance assessments.
Develop equitable long-term development plans, ensuring all team members have access to growth opportunities and are equipped to meet evolving organizational needs.
Lead change management initiatives, maintaining team morale and productivity during transitions.

Inter-Departmental Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Foster inter-departmental collaboration across the Society, ensuring inclusive and equitable participation in the seamless execution of community programs and alignment with organizational objectives.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for new partnerships and future program strategies.
Support the community department in external meetings, conferences, and events.

Risk & Resource Management

Identify potential risks within community programs and develop proactive mitigation strategies.
Oversee budgeting and financial planning, ensuring efficient use of funds.
Work with the CFO to track expenditure, forecast financial needs, and identify funding gaps and or opportunities.
Develop and maintain contingency plans for potential service disruptions.

Work Environment

Under normal conditions, this role is a fully remote position, working from home. However, due to the international nature of the Society’s work, staff may be required to travel to company events, meetings, and conferences as well as some weekend work.

Requirements

Experience and Expertise

Significant experience in operations management, preferably within a nonprofit, healthcare, social services, or community program environment.
Proven experience in developing and executing operational strategies that involve coordination across departments to align objectives with organizational goals.
Strong background in program implementation, process improvement, and performance tracking.
Proficiency with budget management, financial forecasting, and resource allocation.
Demonstrated success in building and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders

Skills and Competencies

Proactive and solution-oriented mindset, with the ability to address challenges and drive improvements in processes and systems.
Skilled in guiding and mentoring diverse teams to achieve both operational and strategic outcomes.
Strong decision-making, change leadership, and problem-solving skills, even in resource-constrained environments.
Creative and resilient, with a solution-focused and lateral thinking approach.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and collaboration tools such as Monday.com, Zoho Voice, Zoom, and Teams.
Knowledge of GDPR and HIPAA regulations is preferred, and training will be provided. 
Comfortable working independently and within a virtual team setting.

Work Environment and Travel Requirements

Must be eligible to work in the US or UK without sponsorship.
Must be able to work with colleagues and stakeholders across different time zones globally, which may occasionally include early morning or late evening meetings.
Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
Stable internet connection required for video calls and cloud-based services, as this is a fully remote role.
Ability to attend one in-person staff retreat annually (UK).
Ability to travel to other meetings and events as required.
