Community Engagement Manager – DPW-Office Of Sustainability Jobs in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA at City of Indianapolis

Position Summary

The position is responsible for facilitating and developing municipal sustainability programs and initiatives. This includes planning, coordinating, developing, and delivering learning resources, creative services, outreach programs, and community events. Overall responsibilities encompass daily information and communication management, grant development and coordination (federal, state, and local), and stakeholder relations.

Position Responsibilities

Schedule, implement, and periodically develop new community-based programs, partnerships, and engagement initiatives.

Identify, initiate, and deepen relationships with community stakeholders and media partners. Promote community awareness to new populations and serve as the primary contact for external community partners.

Implement meetings, surveys, and other communication methods to gather community feedback about OoS and its initiatives.

Attend community meetings on behalf of OoS to address concerns, provide information, and advocate for public participation.

Participate in non-OoS programs and events to understand community interests and activities.

Develop and maintain a stakeholder database, including administrative needs and communication with sustainability groups or advisory committees.

Create mechanisms for evaluating programs and engagement initiatives internally and externally.

Develop and distribute information to the community and the public through multiple channels.

Distribute information to OoS staff, city departments, and volunteers regarding engagement activities.

Prepare briefing materials and talking points for leadership to present at public events.

Assist in identifying funding opportunities, including grant writing, administration, and reporting.

Track outcomes, data, outputs, and budget expenditures, ensuring projects meet goals within timelines, and make adjustments as needed.

Manage contracts and grant agreements, coordinating efforts among city, contractors, and grantees for cohesive sustainability initiatives.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications, environmental science, sustainability, environmental engineering, urban planning, or a related field, with at least one year of experience in an environmental field. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience totaling five years in environmental management or planning is acceptable. Experience in program management, policy development, and public outreach is preferred. Must have effective oral and written communication skills, demonstrate courtesy, tact, diplomacy, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently and with various governmental and public stakeholders.

Must adhere to city policies and ethical standards. Ability to coordinate staff across departments for specific projects.

Independent Judgment

Independent judgment is regularly exercised, especially when policies and procedures are unavailable. Errors in judgment may lead to inconsistencies, regulatory conflicts, or financial losses to the city or regulated entities.
