Founded in 1996 as the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i, HIPHI expanded its focus in 2012 to become the state’s first and only public health institute, addressing a broad range of public health issues. The organization’s work spans food and agriculture, transportation and public safety, oral health, healthy eating and active living, drug and alcohol prevention, tobacco control, COVID-19 response, and workforce development. HIPHI serves as a bridge between communities, government, and health care partners to ensure inclusive participation in public health policy, program design, and investment decisions. Role Description The Community Coalition Coordinator is a full-time, on-site role based in Kahului, HI, responsible for supporting and strengthening local public health coalitions. This position coordinates day-to-day activities such as organizing meetings, facilitating discussions, and maintaining regular communication with coalition members and community partners. The Coordinator leads community outreach and engagement efforts, supports community organizing initiatives, and helps plan and implement events, trainings, and campaigns that promote public health and wellness. The role includes gathering community feedback, tracking activities and outcomes, preparing reports and updates, and collaborating with HIPHI staff to align coalition efforts with broader organizational goals. The Coordinator will represent HIPHI in the community, build relationships with diverse stakeholders, and ensure that coalition work reflects community priorities and cultural values.
Qualifications
- Community engagement and community outreach skills to build relationships, strengthen coalitions, and collaborate with diverse communities.
- Community organizing experience to support collective action, facilitate group decision-making, and mobilize stakeholders around public health goals.
- Strong communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to present information to various audiences.
- Event planning experience to coordinate meetings, community events, trainings, and campaigns, including logistics, promotion, and follow-up.
- Ability to work collaboratively with nonprofit, government, and health care partners, and to navigate multi-sector environments respectfully and effectively.
- Organizational and time management skills to handle multiple projects, track progress, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of or interest in public health, health equity, and community-based approaches; experience in Hawai‘i or familiarity with local cultures and communities is highly beneficial.
- Proficiency with standard office software and online collaboration tools; comfort with maintaining records and preparing reports.
