For over 100 years, YWCA Central Virginia has been serving the women, children, and families of Central Virginia.

Founded in 1912 by a dedicated group of women, who had incidentally been told that creating an organization for women and by women would never fly, the YWCA Central Virginia has grown and adapted to meet the varying needs of the communities we serve.

YWCA Central Virginia serves seven counties and one city, an area of 4,400 square miles with a population of over

400,000 community members. We currently host three key direct service programs: Domestic Violence Prevention, Sexual Assault Response, and Town Center Women’s Residential Housing.

Position Overview

All YWCA Central Virginia staff members are expected to function as self-directed members of a team, model professional standards and YWCA’s mission, and help sustain an environment that eliminates racism, promotes diversity and inclusion, and encourages women’s and girl’s investment in themselves and in the YWCA movement.

Under direct leadership of the Executive Director, the Communications and Marketing Coordinator will support the mission of YWCA Central Virginia by developing and implementing strategic communications, marketing, and public relations initiatives that elevate the organization, strengthen community awareness, and support program and fundraising goals. The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will manage internal and external communications, digital strategy, content creation, media relations, and brand consistency across all platforms. As the first point of contact for donors, community partners, and sponsors, the Communications and Marketing Coordinator exudes the mission of YWCA Central Virginia and sets the tone for all future interactions that model strategies that continuously improve community engagement and awareness of YWCA Central Virginia.

Key Responsibilities

Communications & Brand Management

o Develop and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing plan aligned with YWCA Central Virginia’s mission and strategic priorities.

o Ensure consistent, mission-aligned branding across all print, digital, and program materials

Create compelling messaging for diverse audiences, including donors, survivors, program participants,

partners, and the general public.

o Oversee production of brochures, annual reports, newsletters, impact reports, and marketing collateral.

Digital and Social Media Strategy

o Manage and grow YWCA Central Virginia’s social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).

o Create content calendars, graphics, videos, and multimedia storytelling assets.

o Maintain and update the organizational website; ensure accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with brandstandards.

o Track analytics and provide insight to improve reach, engagement, and conversions.

Public Relations & Community Engagement

o Develop talking points, press kits, and crisis communication materials.

o Support organizational events through promotion, live coverage, and messaging.

o Build relationships with community partners, reporters, and influencers to expand the visibility of YWCA Central Virginia.

Fundraising & Development Support

o Collaborate with the Fundraising team to support annual campaigns, special events, and donor communications.

o Develop fundraising collateral, impact stories, donor stewardship materials, and campaign branding.

o Assist with grant-related communications needs, including success stories, program highlights, and community impact narratives.

Internal Communications

o Support staff and leadership by drafting internal announcements, program updates, and organizational messaging.

o Provide communications coaching and resources for program teams to maintain brand voice and messaging consistency.

Other Duties

â—‹ Uphold the organizational mission throughout all actions and communications within the work environment

and when representing YWCA Central Virginia in public, with other employees, program participants, stakeholders, community partners, donors, etc.

â—‹ Collaborate with and participate in cross-training opportunities across YWCA Central Virginia programs to develop an inclusive understanding of services, foster teamwork, and enhance service delivery through cross functional knowledge and support.

â—‹ Attend staff meetings including program meetings, departmental meetings, and all-staff meetings.

â—‹ Maintain knowledge of YWCA USA network and all YWCA Central Virginia programs, services, and initiatives.

â—‹ Participate in and positively represent YWCA Central Virginia during work related activities held outside of

regular work hours.

Preferred Qualifications

o Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a nonprofit associated program

o 3-5 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or related roles, preferably in a nonprofit environment

o Proficiency with social media management tools, analytics platforms, and content creation software such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite

o Basic website editing knowledge

o Demonstrated experience developing and implementing campaigns and fundraising events as well as cultivating relationships with donors

o Experience working with diverse, multicultural population

o Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and comfortable or willing to

learn best practices for Microsoft Outlook 365, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Slack

o Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive

o Experience using office equipment including Windows-based computers, printers, scanners, and fax machines

Physical Requirements

o Maintain dexterity, vision, and coordination

o Mobile abilities including, but not limited to, walking, bending, squatting, crouching, twisting, kneeling, reaching, climbing stairs, etc.

o Ability to sit for extended periods, 6-8 hours/day

o Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds Environmental Conditions

o The incumbent will work in YWCA facilities with the likelihood of interruptions from clients, staff, or external partners, often addressing urgent and sensitive issues. The ability to stay focused and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic and potentially high-stress setting is required. This position will also entail travel as needed to perform marketing activities.

Mental Demands

o This position requires work which may cause significant stress with various deadlines and work that requires attention to detail with high levels of accuracy. The incumbent must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues including, but not limited to, those facing domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, poverty, homelessness, and racism due to the mission and programs of YWCA.

Position Type and Expected Hours

o This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will work a traditional daylight shift, Tuesday – Thursday, with some additional weekend and evening work as required.

o This is an hourly, part-time position with no eligibility for benefits.

o Eligible for holiday pay, time and a half, for hours worked on YWCA Central Virginia recognized holidays.
