Company and Position Description: Douglas County Historical Society (DCHS) seeks a Collections Specialist to assist its ongoing efforts to preserve and enlighten historical insight in Douglas County, Nebraska.
DCHS is headquartered on the Fort Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College, where it maintains and operates two facilities: the historic General Crook House Museum and a separate Archives Center. The Archives Center collects and maintains written records, photos, and other items and collections related to life in Douglas County. It offers preservation, research, and replication services. DCHS develops programs and lectures such as Second Sunday Talks, Speakers Bureau presentations, and History and Appreciation of Antiques classes to reveal and educate the public about the history of Douglas County. DCHS, a 501(c)(3) organization, has over 500 members and donors, as well as an active group of dedicated volunteers.
Primary Duties: This part-time (20 hours/week) position reports to the Executive Director. The Collections Specialist is responsible for the management, documentation, and preservation of extensive DCHS’s permanent collection. Primary responsibilities include:
Collections management to include—(i) Monitoring care standards in accordance with DCHS policies; (ii) Facilitating care and control of collections on-site, focusing on the Collection Assessment Initiative; (iii) Overseeing packing and shipping and courier services, as needed; and (iv) Making deaccession recommendations to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Information management (manual and electronic) to include—(i) Managing the permanent collections catalog and files; (ii) Organizing and implementing inventory projects; and (iii) Maintaining the DCHS Past Perfect Database updates and backups.
Managing/directing Archives Center volunteers on collection- and research-related projects.
Performing other collections-related duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director.
Occasionally representing DCHS on committees and events such as the DCHS Speakers Bureau series.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Library and Information Science, History, Journalism, or Social Sciences (Master’s degree or coursework preferred);
Prior museum or archival experience (minimum of 3 years preferred);
Proficiency in Past Perfect software or other collections management software (preferred);
Proven experience with data entry and an ability to learn new software programs;
Proven experience in collections, registration, and/or archives; and
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $26.00 – $30.00 per hour
