About Green Beetz

Green Beetz is a New York City–based nonprofit that empowers students and families to understand the modern food system and make healthy, sustainable food choices. Our programs use food as a lens to explore nutrition, environmental sustainability, and societal issues through hands-on, project-based learning. During the school year, Green Beetz programming reaches classrooms across NYC public schools.

Role Overview

Green Beetz is seeking a part-time Classroom Instructor to lead in-person nutrition, cooking, and sustainability lessons for elementary through high school students across New York City. We are looking for a self-starter who brings passion, enthusiasm, and professionalism to every classroom. The ideal candidate has strong teaching experience, a genuine interest in food education and sustainability, and the ability to travel across all five boroughs to reach our school partners. To best serve our diverse student populations across New York City, professional proficiency or fluency in Spanish is highly preferred and will be prioritized.

Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Deliver engaging, hands-on cooking, nutrition, and sustainability lessons to K–12 students in partner schools across all five boroughs
  • Follow the approved Green Beetz curriculum closely and consistently
  • Adapt delivery as appropriate for different grade levels and school contexts, while staying true to the curriculum’s content and goals
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and high-energy classroom environment

Logistics & Communication

  • Attend all required professional development (PD) sessions and team trainings
  • Communicate proactively and clearly with the Green Beetz team about scheduling, classroom needs, and any issues that arise
  • Maintain organized records and documentation as needed
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a team-player mindset

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have prior teaching or facilitation experience with children and youth ranging from 4 – 18 years old, ideally in one or more of the following: environmental science, nutrition, food systems, sustainability, cooking-based activities,
  • Be able to travel to schools across all five NYC boroughs
  • Be available weekday mornings, afternoons, and/or after-school hours (Monday–Friday)
  • Be highly organized, reliable, and punctual — able to commit to a series of weekly classes for up to 12 consecutive weeks
  • Be an enthusiastic and confident communicator who enjoys working with children and teens
  • Be flexible and adaptable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Be genuinely enthusiastic about Green Beetz’s mission and values

Candidates with one or more of the following criteria will be significantly prioritized (PLEASE EXPLICITLY REFER TO THESE IN YOUR EMAIL TO US):

  • High proficiency or fluency in Spanish
  • Professional Culinary or food industry experience
  • Experience teaching in District 75, special education classrooms / settings
  • Certification in RD / RND.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a part-time, per diem position. Pay is $125 per class for up to 4 hours of work (45–90 minutes of teaching plus planning, prep, and clean-up), and an additional $30/hour for administrative duties (e.g., training, attending meetings).
