Increase students’ access to federal meal programs, prioritizing those in need, by enhancing technical assistance and available tools for schools and organizations supporting meal programs across Washington. Consult with schools and organizations to support their implementation and/or improvement of alternative breakfast models, the Summer Food Service Program, the Seamless Summer Option, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Additionally, raise awareness of the Community Eligibility Provision among eligible schools.

Key Washington counties for this work include Chelan, Clark, Cowlitz, Ferry, King, Klickitat, Lewis, Lincoln, Mason, Okanogan, Pierce, Spokane, Stevens, Thurston, and Walla Walla. This project supports economic stability by increasing access to federal meal programs for students and raising awareness of the Community Eligibility Provision. Increased participation in federal meal programs and adoption of the Community Eligibility Provision helps schools provide low-cost and free meals, ensuring students receive reliable, nutritious meals that support their educational outcomes while helping families manage household expenses.

Member Duties:

Execute a statewide campaign to raise awareness about Free Summer Meals, a resource that is underutilized in many communities with limited participation, prioritizing key regions.

Provide resources for staff in school districts and organizations serving Free Summer Meals.

Assist in evaluating program outcomes and identifying areas for improvement at the conclusion of summer.

Support the organization’s relationships with school districts across Washington implementing new or continuing Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) programs to expand student access to school breakfast.

Assist districts in creating and maintaining BAB programs to enhance effectiveness.

Collaborate to implement a strategy for increasing awareness and participation in After school Meals through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in Washington.

Assist districts in effectively implementing the Community Eligibility Provision by maintaining resources with up-to-date program information and best practices.
