Employment Status: Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Starting Pay Rate: $15.31/hr

Experience Required: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with at least six (6) months experience working with children or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the duties of the job.

Minimum Education Requirements: College coursework in science, education, or environmental studies.

Department: Conservation, Education, Science.

Direct Supervisor: Assistant Director of Education.

Supervisory Responsibility: Direct (0); Indirect (0)

Primary Work Location: Zoo Setting both indoors and outdoors.

Other: This position is subject to pre-employment and/or periodic background checks and restricted registry checks. Ability to complete CPR/1st Aid certification within 30 days of hire. This position works around animals susceptible to specific respiratory diseases and, thus, is subject to annual tuberculosis testing.

Job Summary: The Camp Lead engages campers through environmental and conservation education lessons that support the Zoo’s mission, vision, and values. This position facilitates fun and safe learning experiences with the support of the Camp Assistant to help campers gain an appreciation for wildlife and the natural world. Camp includes Zoo tours, animal encounters, arts and crafts, games, and activities for age groups ranging from 5 to 17 years of age.

Essential Job Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

Teach scripted, animal and plant-oriented programs. This includes properly handling and storing biofacts from the educational collection and leading outdoor tours.

Supervise children for the duration of camp

Have appropriate interactions with camp parents and zoo staff;

Provide a safe learning environment.

Follow OKC policies and procedures, including those related to medical and corrective action situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.

Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Serve as a positive role model for campers, encouraging teamwork, respect, and empathy among campers.

Be flexible and adaptable to changes in schedule, activities, and camper needs.

Problem-solving and handling unexpected situations with composure.

Document all camp issues as needed including camper behavior and incidents.

Comfortable with and has the ability to handle animal ambassadors with provided training.

Work in a manner that supports and protects the health of the assigned collection, to include wearing assigned PPE and limiting exposure to known contagions.

Complete assigned responsibilities, including set-up, clean-up, and program maintenance.

Assist with daily check-in and check-out as needed.

Work collaboratively with other camp staff members to ensure a smooth operation.

Report any concerns or issues to the Program Supervisor.

Drive excellence in guest interactions and satisfaction.

Professionally represent the Zoo at all times.
