Building Resilient Local Food System VISTA Jobs in Laramie, Wyoming, USA at AmeriCorps & Senior Corps

Position: Building a Resilient Local Food System VISTA

Building a Resilient Local Food System VISTA

Located in the last state in the US to form a food policy council, the Wyoming Food Coalition is actively working towards sustainable local food economies in Wyoming that are diverse, thriving, and equitable. According to U.S. Census data, 11.4% of Wyoming’s population experiences poverty. 1 in 10 people face hunger, with even higher rates of hunger for Wyoming children: 1 in 8.

Wyoming residents face unique barriers to accessing healthy food and acquiring assistance through social services due to the state’s rural nature and great distances between cities and towns. A lack of public transportation infrastructure, short growing season for local food, and limited production of fruits and vegetables across the state create further challenges to citizens accessing healthy food. Additionally, small-scale food producers in the state face challenges to creating viable businesses and connecting their products to larger markets.

The Wyoming Food Coalition strengthens local food systems by connecting stakeholders and amplifying their voices to ensure Wyoming producers, consumers, and environments thrive. More specifically, the Wyoming Food Coalition is working on developing a state-wide stakeholder inventory and outreach plan, hosting quarterly stakeholder gathering events with aspects of food safety and farm to school program training, spreading awareness and making resources centered around grant funding more accessible to producers and other food systems security entities, and working towards more sustainability in the organization itself, but also in the Wyoming food system as a whole.

Member Duties:

The VISTA member will identify and research existing food system databases and create and implement an updated public database of local food and food security resources.

Develop relationships and partnerships with local school districts, Farm to School activities, food producers, and food assistance programs across the state to increase the representation and number of stakeholders within the Coalition’s network.
