Company Description: Constellation Cat Cafe is a 501(c)3 nonprofit located in Lansing, MI right in Old Town! Our mission is to create a safe environment for all people to discover the joy of cat interaction and ownership through education, inclusive events, and outreach. We support local animal rescue shelters through capacity building and finding homes for adoptable cats.
Role Description: The Building Maintenance Committee is responsible for helping ensure that Constellation Cat Cafe’s facility is safe, functional, well-maintained, and prepared for future needs. This committee provides both strategic support and hands-on assistance with building upkeep, maintenance planning, and facility improvement projects. The Building Maintenance Committee reports to the Board of Directors.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Maintenance Planning and Oversight: Identify routine maintenance needs and recommend preventative maintenance schedules; Assist in planning for future repairs, upgrades, and capital projects; Help develop maintenance priorities in collaboration with Staff and the Board.
- Vendor and Contractor Support: Solicit and review bids or estimates for maintenance, repair, and improvement work; Provide recommendations to Staff and the Board regarding vendors and project scope; Assist with coordination or oversight of approved maintenance projects as needed.
- Hands-On Building Support: Participate in routine upkeep and light maintenance tasks such as changing HVAC filters, changing light bulbs, painting, minor repairs, and general handyman work; Support periodic work days or maintenance projects requiring volunteer labor; Flag safety issues or urgent repair needs promptly.
- Facilities Monitoring and Reporting: Conduct occasional walk-throughs of the building to identify maintenance concerns; Document issues, completed work, and recommendations for future actions; Provide regular updates and recommendations to the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
- Interest in and commitment to the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability
- Comfort with hands-on maintenance and repairs
- Experience in facility management, construction, trades, engineering or property maintenance (helpful but not required)
- Ability to assess priorities, problem-solve, and work collaboratively
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and willing to roll up sleeves when needed
Time Commitment:
- Approximately 4-8 hours per month, including virtual meetings and hands-on work
- Attendance at 75% of meetings (virtual)
- Occasional participation in scheduled work days or maintenance projects, including evenings and weekends
