Trailnet is an Essex based community interest company dedicated to helping people of all ages and abilities take part in outdoor physical activity. Many of these activities take place at our cycle centre in Thorndon Country Park where we offer low cost cycle hire and regular social rides for those that enjoy cycling as a means of improving their health and fitness.
On Tuesdays we run our Inclusive Cycling sessions where people with a range of disabilities come along for supported group rides on our standard bikes or adapted trikes. The popularity of these sessions is a double-edged sword: it’s great to see so many people enjoying their rides but the riders need a lot of support.
Up to now, we have subsidised the rides but, as a small not-for-profit organisation, we can no longer afford to do this and the only way that we can continue is to recruit and train some enthusiastic volunteers to assist with the rides under the supervision of our qualified ride leader.
As a volunteer, you would help welcome both groups and individual riders, assist with getting them on bikes & trikes, fitting helmets, and going out with them on rides of anything from one to five miles. Don’t worry if you can’t ride as some of the trike groups only travel at walking pace.
Skills
Enthusiasm about cycling will help as we will give advice to volunteers about assisting disabled cyclists using our cycle fleet which includes:
Adapted trikes (4 years upwards)
Adult tandems
Child tandems
Trike with front carrier
Side-by-side trike
Hand crank trike
• Suitable for under 18s but not suitable for under 16s
• Training provided
• Volunteers covered by insurance
