ABSTRACT OF THE POSITION:
Under the supervision of the WIC Clinic Supervisor, performs the functions of a WIC Nutritionist Assistant in accordance with established guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of Federal and State regulations. In coordination with the Clinic Supervisor, performs all aspects of client nutrition education, including but not limited to high-risk care plans, group classes, assessment of prescriptions for special formulas or foods; maintains a professional and effective working relationship with WIC personnel at the State and local levels. Responsible to perform program functions that determine nutritional and medical risk factors by using anthropometric measurements, hematological testing, conducting nutrition interviews, and evaluating medical data forms; provides general nutrition education based on risk codes; refers clients to appropriate community social services agencies and accurately documents all services provided on proper state forms and/or databases. Candidate must hold a Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in areas such as Food & Nutrition, Nutrition, Nutrition Sciences, or Dietetics.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES (including but not limited to):

Nutritionist Assistant
Works with Clinic Nutritionist/Supervisor to assist with WIC high-risk clients.
Helps clients with nutrition-related issues as they arise.
Teaches nutrition classes including preparing educational materials for clients.
Places Breastfeeding orders and maintain proper inventory.
Places Clinic and State monthly orders.
Monitors and assesses the quality and appropriateness of nutritional services by conducting monthly chart audits.
Conducts monthly Breastfeeding error log.
Conducts monthly electric pump audits.
Refers to the Nutritionist Supervisor, State WIC Staff, or outside resources as deemed necessary.
Assists Program Manager, Clinic Supervisors, and Clinic Coordinators in staff education.
Assists with certifications and benefits as time permits.
Responsible for attending state and agency training as required.
Stays up to date and current on policies and procedures set by state and/or agency.
Travels to other WIC sites as needed.
Certifier
Performs eligibility, certification, and nutrition education functions.
Responsible for issuing accurate benefits.
Provides basic nutrition counseling to low-risk WIC Clients.
Refers clients to medical care and social services agencies as appropriate.
Responsible for following HIPPA rules and regulations.
Responsible for calling clients to reschedule appointments and returning calls within 24 hours.
Responsible for maintaining a healthy and nutrition-oriented clinic environment.
Travels to other WIC sites as needed.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the management team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be able to sit at a table or desk for long periods of time with occasional standing, walking, squatting, or reaching.
Must be able to work for long periods of time while maintaining concentrated attention to detail.
Must have the manual dexterity to use office equipment including but not limited to a copier, computer keyboard, or phone keypad.
Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without material handling equipment.
Must have the ability to hear and speak face to face, over the telephone, or in virtual meetings.
Must be able to travel by car, bus, airplane, or train from site to site as needed.

Education & Work Experience

Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Food & Nutrition.
Must have passed the WIC Certified Professional Authority exam in accordance with the State of Nevada WIC Policy GP 9 or pass WIC Certified Professional Authority exam in accordance with the State of Nevada WIC Policy GP 9 within 6 months of hire date.
Must complete the Nevada WIC Breastfeeding Basics course within 6 months of hire date.
Six (6) months of general clerical work experience is essential.
Six (6) months of customer service in a business is mandatory.

Skills & Abilities

Must be organized, display strong time management abilities, and have attention to detail to effectively meet clinic needs.
Must maintain a positive, open, and objective attitude towards others.
Must be able to accurately type.
Must have a good working knowledge of English, grammar, punctuation, etc.
Must have the ability to operate standard office machines such as computers, tablets, printers, copiers, etc.
Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) programs and other software programs as needed
Must have the ability to answer telephones and greet the public in a friendly and courteous manner.
Must be flexible and adaptable to changing schedules and/or work tasks.
Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and work independently with limited direction from supervisors.
Required to properly utilize knowledge of policies and procedures mandated by the WIC State Program.
Must have the ability to interact with tact and discretion with supervisors, officials, employees, and clients.
Ability to speak in a clear and understandable manner and write legibly using the English language is a requirement.
Ability to maintain the highly confidential nature of incoming paperwork is a requirement.
Must submit negative TB results (One-Step Skin Test or Chest X-Ray) prior to hire date and throughout duration of employment.
Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol testing.

Preferred

Previous WIC experience is preferred.
Bilingual (English-Spanish) speaking and writing skills helpful.
One (1) year experience in a business or clinical environment is preferable.
Six (6) months experience with a multi-line phone system is very helpful.
One (1) year of general clerical experience (filing, faxing, copying, etc.) is encouraged.
