Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation is a non-profit ecological field research station and nature preserve located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. Our mission is to preserve the pristine conditions of Lake Lacawac and its surrounding environment while providing educational opportunities for the public on environmental and conservation issues.

HOURS: This is a seasonal maintenance position, running from May through October. The typical workweek consists of around 20 hours, with a maximum of 30 hours. Effective planning of work hours is required to align with activities and events at Lacawac.

OBJECTIVE:

Perform a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of Lacawac and related facilities.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

1. Reports to: Receives immediate supervision from the Director of Facilities.

2. Directs: Does not supervise any employees.

3. Other: Works closely with volunteers and Head Gardener.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This is a non-supervisory position engaged in construction, repair and operation of various types of equipment for the maintenance of Lacawac Sanctuary and facilities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

· Operate mowers, tractors, vehicles and other small equipment;

· Utilize a variety of hand and power tools in maintenance work;

· Assist in routine maintenance of such equipment;

· General facility upkeep and cleaning including trash removal and bathroom cleaning.

· Perform general maintenance, construction and repairs as assigned.

· Weekly schedule of cleaning facilities (bathrooms, floors)

· Perform routine landscaping and trail maintenance on the grounds

· Painting as assigned

· To assist with minor plumbing including unblocking sinks and drains etc.

· Assist Director of Facilities with electrical, plumbing or other repairs

· Undertake duties as assigned or emergency tasks (e.g. shoveling snow)

· Identify and report the need for major repairs

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of general construction tools and equipment with safe work practices.

· The ability to perform general construction and maintenance activities; perform heavy manual labor;

· Learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment

· Understand and carry out oral and written directions

· Establish and maintain effective working relations with those contacted in the course of work.

· Education: High school student or above with a minimum age of 18 years old

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: Valid Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator’s license.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to write, read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to visitors and other employees of the organization.

Essential Physical Demands

Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be physically able to frequently grasp, grip, pull, push, twist, and lift an average of 35-50 pounds.
