Part-Time Art Teacher / Art Instructor: Adult Groups

Lake County Haven – Libertyville, IL
Part-Time | 2–4 hours per week

Bring Creativity, Connection & Joy to Women Rebuilding Their Lives

Lake County Haven is seeking a creative, flexible, and compassionate Part-Time Art Teacher to lead art classes and creative activities for women in our programs at our two Libertyville locations.

This is a small but meaningful position: 2–4 hours per week, working with groups of no more than 10 adult women at a time (typically 5). We are looking for someone who has a wide variety of art skills, knows how to teach adults, and can create an environment where women with very different personalities, backgrounds, abilities, and levels of interest can feel comfortable participating.

Our ideal candidate understands that teaching in this setting may look different from teaching in a traditional classroom. Some participants may be enthusiastic and eager to create, while others may be hesitant, distracted, resistant, or simply having a difficult day. You need to be able to roll with resistance, adapt your approach, and work comfortably with many different personalities. Patience, humor, flexibility, and the ability to read the room are just as important as artistic ability.

What You’ll Do

  • Plan and lead engaging, hands-on art classes and creative activities for adult women.
  • Teach a variety of artistic mediums and projects, drawing on a broad range of art skills.
  • Adapt projects and teaching methods to accommodate different skill levels, interests, personalities, and abilities.
  • Create a welcoming, relaxed, and supportive environment where participants feel comfortable trying something new.
  • Encourage creativity and self-expression without pressure or judgment.
  • Know when to provide instruction and when to step back and allow participants to make the project their own.
  • Respond calmly and positively when participants are reluctant, resistant, or disengaged.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries while building positive relationships with residents.
  • Organize and care for art supplies and the classroom/work area.
  • Communicate with Haven staff regarding classes, supplies, and participant needs.
  • Follow Lake County Haven policies and procedures.

What We’re Looking For

  • A wide variety of art skills and experience with multiple artistic mediums.
  • Experience teaching or facilitating art for adults.
  • The ability to explain artistic techniques clearly and make projects approachable for beginners.
  • Patience, warmth, creativity, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work comfortably with many different personalities and levels of participation.
  • Someone who can roll with resistance and adapt when a class doesn’t go exactly as planned.
  • A nonjudgmental and encouraging approach.
  • Dependability and professionalism.
  • Experience working with people facing challenging circumstances is a plus, but not required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Schedule

This is a 2–4 hour per week part-time position serving our two Libertyville locations.

Weekend availability is preferred:

  • Saturdays: afternoons
  • Sundays: mornings or afternoons

We would also like candidates to have some availability during Monday–Friday business hours if they want to teach 4 classes vs 2 classes per week.

Classes will be limited to a maximum of 10 adult participants per group, allowing the instructor to provide individual attention and create a more personal experience.

About Lake County Haven

Lake County Haven is a nonprofit organization serving women and children experiencing homelessness, including women fleeing domestic violence and recovering from addiction and mental health issues. Our programs help women stabilize their lives, address physical and mental health needs, pursue employment and education, save money, and build the skills and confidence they need for independent living.

At the Haven, we believe rebuilding a life is about more than meeting basic needs. It is also about connection, creativity, dignity, confidence, and discovering what is possible.

Art gives our residents an opportunity to step outside of the challenges they are facing, try something new, experience success, express themselves, and simply enjoy creating.

If you are an artist who loves teaching, enjoys working with adults, and can bring both creativity and flexibility to the classroom, we’d love to hear from you.
