Anser Charter School is a free, public K–8 charter school located in Garden City, Idaho, just minutes from downtown Boise. Founded in 1998, Anser has served the community for over 25 years by providing a high‑quality education rooted in Expeditionary Learning, a hands‑on model that connects academics to real‑world experiences, service learning, and strong community partnerships. Anser serves students from diverse backgrounds and is committed to supporting the whole child and whole family.
As the number of low‑income students at Anser has grown, so has the need for coordinated family supports. While the school counselor currently connects families to community resources, limited capacity makes it difficult to build long‑term systems that address the root causes of poverty. This Ameri Corps VISTA project will strengthen Anser’s ability to respond by building sustainable partnerships, systems, and programs aligned with the Community School model.
The VISTA member will work closely with school leadership, families, and community partners to conduct a community needs analysis using data, surveys, and listening sessions. They will help design a Community School strategy focused on supports such as after‑school care, mental health resources, and family navigation services. The VISTA member will also build sustainability by researching funding opportunities, supporting grant writing, and developing a volunteer program.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys relationship‑building, problem‑solving, and systems‑level work. Strong communication skills, organization, initiative, and an interest in education, community development, or social services are helpful. VISTA members will gain experience in community engagement, data‑informed planning, grant development, and nonprofit capacity building while making a lasting impact.
Member Duties
The Ameri Corps VISTA member will work with Anser Charter School staff, families, and community partners to strengthen supports for students and families through the Community School model. The member will conduct a community needs assessment using data, surveys, and listening sessions to identify priority areas. They will help design a Community School strategy by researching programs and building partnerships that address key needs such as after‑school care, mental health supports, and family resource navigation.
The VISTA member will also research funding opportunities, support grant writing, and help develop a volunteer program to sustain services. To ensure long‑term impact, the member will create toolkits and standard operating procedures that document processes, partnerships, and best practices for future use.
