The Lewis County Humane Society is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation which owns and operates a no-kill animal shelter on the Pine Grove Rd in Glenfield, NY. Our mission is to provide care, comfort and kindness to companion animals without homes. The LCHS works towards ending unwanted and abandoned animals through spay/neuter. We strive to ensure the animals in our care are adopted into loving, forever homes by promoting compassionate, responsible pet ownership.
Job Summary:
The Animal Care Worker plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of animals within Lewis County Humane Society’s shelter. This position involves a range of animal control and care responsibilities, providing essential support to the community and ensuring the health and welfare of our animal residents. While this role can be physically demanding and emotionally challenging, it is also deeply rewarding for those passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of animals.
Duties and Responsibilites:
Feed and provide clean water for animals to maintain their health and general welfare.
Maintain the well-being of animals in the shelter, including reuniting pets with their owners and preventing overcrowding and disease spread.
Clean and disinfect animal enclosures, perform laundry duties and ensure areas are stocked with necessary supplies.
Interact with dogs and cats to provide both mental and physical enrichment.
Administer medicines and vaccinations to animals.
Engage with the public in a positive and customer-centric manner, assisting with adoptions, owner surrenders, lost pets, and more.
Educate the public on Lewis County Humane Society’s animal ordinances and promote programs such as rabies clinics and adoption events.
Communicate the importance of spaying/neutering pets and the benefits of adoption, while participating in outreach activities.
Assist in training and collaborating with volunteers to ensure a positive and collaborative work environment.
Perform related tasts as assigned.
Qualifications:
Passion for animal welfare and a strong commitment to our organization’s mission.
Ability to perform medium physical work, including walking, standing, stooping, and lifting between 20 and 50 pounds on a regular basis. This includes, but is not limited to, handling large dogs pulling and tugging numerous times daily.
Willingness to work in an environment with exposure to disease/pathogens, dog and cat allergens, potentially agressive animals, and occasional mental stress.
Flexibility of nights and weekends.
